Rotarian of the Week: Alan Hartley

Posted By rotary

The Rotarian of the week was Alan Hartley who was introduced by his daughter Elizabeth Hartley. Alan has been a member of the Rotary Club of Tuscaloosa since 1979, when he was inducted by his dad, George Hartley.

Alan is a 1973 graduate of Tuscaloosa High School and is a 1977 graduate of the University of Alabama, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Accounting. He is currently a CPA at Morrison & Smith in Tuscaloosa. Alan has always lived in Tuscaloosa aside from a brief stay in Birmingham, right after he graduated college. He has been married to his wife, Carol, for 34 years and he has two children, Elizabeth and Stuart.

Alan is a member of the American Institute of Certified Pubic Accountants, The Alabama Society of CPA’s, the board of the Tuscaloosa Ballroom Dance Club, and he is a member of the Chamber of Commerce Finance Committee. Alan is also involved in several charitable organizations which include: being a board member of Habitat for Humanity-Tuscaloosa, a trustee, deacon, choir member, and member of the finance committee of Calvary Baptist Church; and he is the treasurer for the Alabama Health Care Hall of Fame.

While Alan’s professional life keeps him very busy, when he has some down time, some of his favorite activities include; reading books involving American History; going fishing, primarily at his cabin in Fayette County; going hunting; and working out or weight lifting.

Alan says if he ever won the lottery he would first ask his wife if there was anything they needed. After that he would purchase a safe place to lock up the rest of the money after, of course, fulfilling his obligation to the Rotary International Foundation.

Some items on his bucket list include vacationing at a Dude Ranch, re- learning to play the trombone, visiting Normandy, and to go at least once to every Civil War battlefield in America.
